PON (Passive Optical Network)

The system is mainly composed of OLT (Optical Line Terminal), ONU (Optical Network Unit) and ODN (Optical Distribution Network) in the optical distribution network. Among them, the ODN does not include active equipment, and the OLT to the ONU is connected through an optical splitter to form a P2MP (point-to-multipoint) optical access system.

PON can save optical fiber resources, ODN does not need power supply, user access is convenient, and supports multi-service access. It is a broadband optical fiber access technology that operators are currently vigorously promoting. There are mainly two technologies, EPON and GPON. The PON system uses WDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology to achieve single-fiber bidirectional transmission.

In order to separate the incoming and outgoing signals of multiple users on the same optical fiber, the following two multiplexing techniques are used,
1. The downstream data stream adopts broadcast technology

2. Upstream data flow adopts TDMA technology
